Slightly delayed, below is a short report from the Castlecomer Challenge cycling event excellently run by Deenside Wheelers
Congrats to our friends Deenside Wheelers in Castlecomer for putting on a fantastic cycling event, "The Castlecomer Challenge", on Sunday 16th October. Whoever is on the Deenside Wheelers Committee in charge of weather did their job very well as we were truly spoiled with clear skies and near perfect cycling conditions. Riders were welcomed to the start line by a DJ, creating a great buzz before the "special guest" lead the way onto the road to start the cycle.
There were 2 options on the day for riders; 50km route and 100km route, with all money raised going to Castlecomer Day Care Centre and the Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team. Deenside Wheelers really pulled out all the stops for the day and special guest for the event was none other than legendary Irish cyclist Sean Kelly and they managed to raise over €12,000 for the two charities.
The route started at the hurling ground on the way into Castlecomer, moving across the town and out towards Carlow and then onto Stradbally for the 50km rest stop. Here we were really spoiled again, as sponsors of the day Spar Castlecomer put on a feast of sandwiches, chocolate, cake, tea and coffee. There were over 400 cyclists that passed through the rest-stop and all looked well fed afterwards! A small group of KTC Members stuck together with around 20 of the Deenside Wheelers for the 2nd half of the cycle (which came down through Abbeyleix and Ballinakill and over the final 6km hill climb into Castlecomer that proved quite tricky!) and in doing so had the pleasure of Sean Kelly's company for the last 30km's of the cycle. The ex-UCI World No.1 was very approachable both on the cycle and afterwards, stopping to pose for pictures with anyone that asked him...a true sporting gent.
A great day was had by all and congratulations again to Deenside Wheelers and all involved (marshalls, emergency services, registration etc) for putting on very successful event, which is made even more special considering the club, like ourselves, is only it's first year (must have been something in the water in late 2010!). We eagerly look forward to their next event, hopefully sooner rather than later.
