Thursday 13th of January marked the official opening of Kilkenny Triathlon Club as the launch night took place in Hotel Kilkenny. The people of Kilkenny duly showed that they are not only a fit and healthy bunch but also love a challenge when over 150 people attended the launch of Kilkenny's first Triathlon Club.

The club committee were astounded by the number of people on the night, with fears of only a handful of people turning up quickly being discarded!

Welcoming everyone to the launch, Chairperson of the new club, Emmet McAviney said that he was delighted with the attendance and glad to see that there were so many people taking an interest in the sport: "We decided to set up the club as an outlet for people of all abilities in Kilkenny, interested in the sport to be able to train together and participate in the many events that are taking place around the country as a group, and judging by the number of people here tonight there is a demand for such a club"

Committee member George Sherwood of sherwoodsdigital, the club's main sponsor, said that anyone could complete a triathlon having gone from been very unfit a few years ago to completing the Tri-Athy and the Ironman in Switzerland early last year. George’s story of couch-athlete to Ironman in 2 years was very well received and will hopefully prove inspirational to all in attendance as the tri season kicks off shortly!

Many thanks to Hotel Kilkenny for the use of the room for the evening and also thanks to our sponsors for being present on the night. It was a great way to kick off the club and we are all excited to get to know the members better and get training and racing.
